Bull Elk Portrait (Explored June 30, 2021)

            We watched this bull elk on a trip to Great Smoky Mountain National Park quite some time ago.  At the time he was the dominate bull elk in the Oconaluftee area of GSMNP.   After grazing in the open fields near the Visitor Center he herded his harem across the Oconaluftee River and back into the woods.  Just before leaving the river he paused to turned around to and check on the half dozen or so spike elk and bull elk wannabees that always seem to trail a few hundred yards behind the herd.  The old bull looks pleased with these circumstances.  It is the middle of the fall rut, his harem is corralled on one side of the river, and all of the wannabees are on the other.
