United 1500 (B500 MPY) - a photo on Flickriver

            The United vehicles that I saw in Middlesbrough were as dull as everywhere else, but I did have my fingers crossed that one bus would appear - and it did ! They had the second Danish-built Leyland-DAB Tiger Cub, which spent its whole time with United (and Tees & District) working from Loftus depot. Its career was brought to a premature end in 1992 following an accident, but that presented the perfect opportunity for Jim Stones to get his hands on it, renovate it and put it in his fleet alongside the other one, A499 MHG. And he also got to have a fishing holiday in Denmark, when he took it back to the factory to be repaired ! 

I sometimes wondered whether it was just a coincidence, or did United number it 1500 so that the number plate followed on from A499 MHG ? The chassis numbers were consecutive as well. 

Jim let it go after 8 years on the road, and it passed to John MacEwan at Dumfries in 2002. It was bought for preservation many years later, but I have no idea what state it is in now.
