Weka (Gallirallus australis australis) - 20240302-07

            Large, flightless rail endemic to New Zealand. Can be very curious, especially when living around people. Extinct over large tracts of the mainland. Variable plumage. Most birds are predominantly light brown with red eyes, a broad pointed bill, and strong legs. Often detected by characteristic “cooeet” calls given at dawn and in early evening. Buff-banded Rail is smaller and more boldly marked, with a rufous eye-stripe and a broad orange breast band.  (eBird)

The Weka came out to greet us after we landed on the island.  We were searching for the Malherbe's Parakeet (which we did find) and this Weka was a welcome addition to the list, especially since it was the only time during the trip that we saw one.  They are surprisingly tame and we could approach them very closely.
