Rachel (26 of 100) - a photo on Flickriver

This is a story of fate and coincidences. To understand, you have to know that where this takes place is approximately 85 miles from where the two main characters live, and they each live in different, fairly large cities approximately 25 miles from each other.

On my latest visit to the beautiful Capay Valley Lavender Farm, I met Rachel. I am always fascinated and in awe of plein air artists. They seem to instill a bit of their soul in each of their creations, as though working out in nature infuses their fingers with some extra magic.

Rachel told me she was having trouble with her sketches, difficulty in finding the right angle. This led to a conversation about a book I am reading, "Art & Fear." how even the most accomplished artists have moments of fear, anxiety, blocks, etc., and how universal that is yet creatives rarely have a chance to talk about it to others, thinking they are the only ones filled with doubts.

She and I exchanged emails and I left her to her sketching while I went about my photographing, but it wasn't long before we were both interrupted by the arrival of a classic car club. The flash of the cars and chatter of these new arrivals was exciting, but we both had lost our momentum, so we sat quietly at a picnic table letting the hubbub pass around us. I had known they were coming, but Rachael had not.

One of their number approached us and began telling us about the club. Rachael told him she knew of a couple near her who collected classic cars and would he happen to know them? "Yes," he replied, "in fact I am going to their house on Saturday." To which Rachael replied, "i am having dinner at their home on Saturday, too!"

Epilogue: Later that evening, I looked up Rachel on IG and was blown away by her talent. I was doubly grateful for having met her.

And such is the magic of Capay Valley. Thank you, Rachel, for participating in my Human Family/100 Strangers project. You are part of that magic (yes, I use the word a lot, but what else would you call it?!).
