Fear of Clouds... and Aliens (in explore)

Nephophobia: A fear of clouds sometimes connected with a fear of storms.

High desert... cold... alone... nothing but alien-looking Joshua trees and scrub for miles. Blue sky had broken through the morning glum until this sudden, engulfing, inescapable, storm cloud... and no where to run. Well... okay... our car 30 feet away... but still...

The fear of a rain storm was real, even though we knew we were in one of the driest regions in North America. Extraterrestrial Highway (NV-375), so named for its proximity to Area 51, cuts through a stretch of the Mojave Desert. In the deep gloom brought on by a thick cloud layer, it took us a few moments to recognize the spiky Joshua trees scattered on either side of the road. First a few, their numbers grew as we progressed.

Not too many miles past The Black Mailbox (www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-black-mailbox) a pull-out with informational signs appeared on this seemingly endless and abandoned highway. Guess we weren't the first needing assurance we hadn't entered another dimension.

Postscript: Within seconds, we were pummeled by hail; seconds later, it was gone.
