Pictographs at the Great Gallery Site / Horseshoe Canyon

            Pictographs at the "Great Gallery" in Horseshoe Canyon. These images, created by Native Americans on exposures of Navajo Sandstone, are representative of the Barrier Canyon style that preceded the arrival of the Fremont people and the Ute. Some of the characteristics of the Barrier Canyon style include human figures that are larger than life-size with vacant-looking or missing eyes, usually lacking appendages, and decorated with vertical body markings. The central figure in this panel has been referred as the "holy man," but there's no evidence for assigning particular religious significance to this form. These Barrier Canyon pictographs are probably 1500-2000 years old. Canyonlands National Park. Wayne Co., Utah.
