Castelo de Arraiolos - a photo on Flickriver

            Arraiolos Castle, Arraiolos, Portugal.

Arraiolos Castle was built around 1387, during the reign of D. Dinis. The centuries of abandonment and the 1755 earthquake contributed to its ruin but, after being classified as a National Monument in 1910, suffered a radical recovery campaign that left it practically as new. Despite the excesses of the intervention it is, however, very hard to contest the beautiful image of its peculiar elliptical wall, the perfect edges of its battlements and the symmetry of the two towers that flank the ogival portico. I guess it’s the stereotypical image of a castle speaking louder than the historical accuracy.

O Castelo de Arraiolos foi construído por volta de 1387 durante o reinado de D. Dinis. Os séculos de abandono e o terramoto de 1755 contribuíram para a sua ruína mas, depois de ter sido classificado como monumento nacional em 1910, foi alvo de uma radical campanha de recuperação que o deixou praticamente como novo. Apesar dos excessos da intervenção é, no entanto, muito difícil resistir à belíssima imagem da sua peculiar muralha elíptica, ao recorte perfeito das suas ameias e à simetria dos dois torreões que ladeiam o pórtico ogival. É, no fundo, a imagem estereotipada de um castelo a falar mais alto do que o rigor histórico.
