1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT

            Named to honour Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari's son and heir Dino Ferrari, the Dino cars were a selection of mid-engined sports cars which, unlike mainstream Ferrari models, were powered by V6 or V8 engines to try and provide lower-cost models. The first generation of these cars, the 206, made its début in 1968, and were designed by  Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. These original cars, of which 152 were made between 1968 and 1969, were powered by 2.0L Dino V6 engines, developed by Magneti Marelli.

In 1969, the original 206 was replaced by the 246, which improved the styling and made way for a much more powerful engine. In keeping with Ferrari tradition, the Dino models used Ferrari racing naming designation of displacement and cylinder count with two digits for the size of the engine in decilitres and the third digit to represent the number of cylinders, an example being the 246, which has a 2.4-litre 6-cylinder and 308 being a 3.0-litre 8-cylinder.

The motor was a 65-degree, dual-overhead-camshaft, iron block with alloy heads, producing 195hp and being made available as a fixed-top GT coupe or, after 1971, an open Spyder GTS. The American version had an exhaust air-pump, and timing changes which created 175hp. The GT had 3 Weber 40 DCNF/6 or 40 DCNF/7 carburetors. For the 246 a new version of the Dinoplex ignition was deployed, the more compact Magneti Marelli AEC103A system.

In terms of weight, the 246GT weighted 2,380lb, whilst the GTS weight 2,426lb, with the bodies being built out of steel rather than aluminium to save on costs. The overall length of the 246's wheelbase was 2.1 inches longer than the previous 206, but the height of the body was identical.

Originally, the car was claimed to have a top speed of 146mph, but a later test by Britain's Motor Magazine revealed it could in fact make 148mph, making it faster than the Porsche 911S's 136mph top speed. 0-50 came in 5.5 seconds, again better than the Porsche 911S but a narrow margin, but the 911 was a clear winner in terms of fuel economy.

Prices for the Dino 246 started at £5,485, £200 more than that of the Porsche, but both cars were equally outdone by the equivalent Citroën SM, at £4,700.

Production lasted between 1969 and 1974, with 2,295 GT's and 1,274 Spyders being constructed. 1973 saw the construction of the 308, a much more angular design similar to the mainstream Ferrari's of the time, such as the 365. The 308 was the last to bear the Dino name as in 1976 Ferrari chose to rationalise and integrate the entire marque as singularly Ferrari, being rebadged the 308 GT4 until production ended in 1980. Ferrari chose instead to launch a range of lower-power, lower-cost sports cars branded the Mondial, which eventually ended production in 1993.

Today, Dino's are very hard to come by, although 308's are more common in their later Ferrari form. This particular car was delivered new to Canada in 1972 and is currently for sale, with 15,000 glorious miles on the clock.
