102/365 - a photo on Flickriver

102/365

            With my D90 back to working order, was about to head downtown when I saw a plume of smoke in my rearview mirror.  I quickly turned my car around, and drove towards the smoke.  Heart racing, wondering what it would turn out to be, I was dissapointed to find it was only a controlled burn (which in its own defense was still cool).  Flames were leaping up about 5-10 feet up with light winds at the top of the hill on Highway PD, overlooking the Ice Age Trail (Madison segment).  I got as close as I could to the flames, without burning myself (which I discovered afterwords was unsucessful as I got minor burns on my arms from the heat radiating off the ground).  Switching between the 105mm 2.5 AI and the 180mm 2.8 ED AI-S, I snapped about 25 frames and was happy with myself.  But as I found myself driving away, I looked all directions: North, South, West, and East it seemed there were large plumes coming from all around.  I drove around trying to find all the fires, but I couldnt go to far as I had to work.  I believe with the nice weather, the local agencies were getting the controlled burns out of the way early.  In effort to bring out more growth in the area.  So all in all, an easy day and quick simple edit: more reason to love my D90 that much more!
