Shoshone Geyser Basin - a photo on Flickriver

            It was the year before the moon landings, and my dad was taking a group of teens to backpack in Yellowstone. Here's how Shoshone Geyser Basin looks as we approached it in 1968. I didn't get many pictures of it on that first visit with my cheap 35mm camera, but I remember hiking around the basin briefly with a few of my friends. We saw Minute Man Geyser erupt, I know. We also saw a porcupine and heard a "drummer" (ruffed grouse) during the night.

The first white man to visit the basin may have been Osborne Russell in 1839. He left notes about it in his Journal of a Trapper. He spoke of an "Hour Spring" that erupted like clockwork, but historians haven't been able to identify which geyser he was talking about. The basin contains some 80 geysers, making it one of the most significant geyser basins in the world (outside of the rest of Yellowstone, that is). Two of them are major geysers, but rarely erupt: Union and Little Giant. The most active these days are Minute Man and Velvet Spring, which erupt about about 10 feet high. Several others erupt a few feet. There are also large hot pools and colorful runoff channels.
