Classic shot

            The Cloisters, also known as “The Undercroft”, connects the East and West courtyards at the University of Glasgow. Via a doorway, it also leads inside the Gilbert Scott Building to the stunning Bute Hall, where the University’s graduation ceremonies are held. With their fluted columns and transverse ribbed vault, these impressive archways are an iconic part of the University, and have been seen onscreen in many films and TV shows including The Outlaw King, Cloud Atlas and Outlander. It came as no surprise when I was told it was part of the inspiration for the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter books and movies.

If you want to utilize the natural sunlight to its maximum extent: The building is facing south-south-west. So, it’s best to catch the noon sunlight for this shoot (depending on the season). Of course, during weekdays it’s rather crowded and buzzing with people walking through The Undercroft. Therefore, weekend and especially Sundays are the best.    

Technical stuff
This is a single shot photo at 3200ISO, f4,5, -2/3, 1/13 (handheld) at 16 mils. The 3200ISO was needed, as you might expect with a name like “The Undercroft”, the natural lighting is rather dim.
Post-production was done with NIK Collection Silver Efex Pro 2.0. The NIK collection tool was created by Nik Software. This tool was incorporated by Google in 2012. Initially, Google continued with enhancements and quickly released further features. The package includes six powerful plug-ins for Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture: Analog Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro (the black-and-white plug-in I used!), HDR Efex Pro, Dfine, Color Efex Pro, Viveza and Sharpener Pro.
Google also slashed the price of the software, making it much more affordable for the photography enthusiast. Later they went a step further, supplying the software for free download and issuing refunds to many who had purchased it. Following the assimilation by Google, DxO - a French company dedicated to software tools for photography - acquired Nik Collection from Google in October 2017 and commenced with further development. In June 2018 they released their first new version, branding it the Nik Collection 2018. At the same time, they branded the free “Nik Collection 2012”. I suspect that’s because Google purchased the software in 2012, but it makes it seem a lot older than the final build Google produced, being 2017.
Finally, I added the copyright sign. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.
