Ice-land - a photo on Flickriver

Ice-land

Not Iceland this time, although it could easily be.... Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye, on an absolutely freezing morning.

The last time I tried to shoot this location was about 2 Summers ago and even in early morning it was absolutely rammed with people so I didn't even try and went elsewhere, today was to be quite different as we pretty much had the place entirely to ourselves, mainly due to being the ones daft enough to come up here in these conditions...even with crampons on it was a nightmare getting here, the stream you have to cross was very deep and fast flowing water and all the stones covered in Ice.

At the start of the path some Chinese tourists asked me how long would it take to walk to the falls.. I pointed at her flat soled baseball trainers and said "about 3 weeks in those" ! Told them not to go up unless they fancied getting airlifted off by mountain rescue, thankfully it must have sunk in as we never saw them again.

The landscape up here in these conditions is just totally transformed, I absolutely love shooting in conditions like this as you can often get completely original images.,

It was a real challenge as I could only wear boots here and not my wellies due to the crampons so getting in the water and setting up was a pretty tricky affair as was keeping the water under boot level..., the polarizer ended up in the water twice and huge bits of ice flowing under the water kept hitting the tripod legs during exposures which meant I kept having to take shots again and again, and of course just as I was finished and getting out I slipped and ended up with a boot full of freezing cold water... but as always, well worth it !
