bioluminescence - a photo on Flickriver

bioluminescence

            I've seen Dall's porpoises, dolphins, humpback whales and orcas swimming at night, this is just an incredible experience , why? because of tiny organisms called Dinoflagellates. The latter are phytoplankton ( base of the food web, they use sunlight to produce organic matter (photosynthesis) via Chlorophyll pigments), and are quite abundant in coastal waters of British Columbia. Dinoflagellates are able to make bioluminescence in response to mechanical, chemical and/or temperature stimuli. 

When cetaceans are swimming in these waters, dinoflagellates flash all around them and amazing lines of light are generated. A group of Dall's porpoises swimming at high speed create beautiful bright stripes in the dark water.
Orcas passing by very close to the shore at night woke me up several times and in addition to the bioluminscence in the water, their blows were  full of Dinoflagellates flashing too..fantastic

Here it's a Dall's porpoise in Johnstone Strait, in day time... Next time I'll try to get night shots of bioluminescence..not easy though!
