1606_2376 Burrowing Owl Captures Mouse

            Continuing with the raptor series, here's a Burrowing Owl from five years ago - the last time a pair nested close enough to the road for good photo ops from the rolling red Toyota blind. They're cute. We all find them cute, although the Deer Mouse seen here in the male owl's death grip probably would disagree. I had been tracking him as he hunted not far from the nest. For the most part that month he was catching large black crickets; this was the only time I saw him capture larger prey. The little rodent's struggles did not last long, and in fact were over by the time I squeezed off this frame. 

Deer Mice and other small rodents such as voles are major prey species for all the prairie predators out there, including raptors. In wild prairie reserves such as Grasslands, this can result in a balanced system, with unintended side benefits to photographers.
