The screw pines or Pandab stand all along the beach. Because of the conspicuous aerial roots, I tacitly thought they were mangroves. But that was a mistake. Undoubtedly, in the event of a flood or tsunami, the screw pines have the same function as the mangroves, which is to break the flood. The Pandan leaves have a high status in Sri Lanka's kitchen. Wikipedia writes: "In Sri Lanka, pandan leaves are used heavily in both vegetable and meat dishes and are often grown in homes. It is common practice to add a few pieces of pandan leaf when cooking red or white rice as well". The fruit resembles a red pineapple and is edible. It serves as food for fruit bats, rats, crabs and elephants. The jumble of aerial roots and branches is worth a shot.
