Oncometopia sp. - Sharpshooter Leafhopper (Stål, 1869)

Description: The genus Oncometopia is made of sharpshooter leafhoppers found in North and South America and are members of the family Cicadellidae, subfamily Cicadellinae and tribe Proconiini. The subject portrayed is a female. Females lay the eggs side by side, in a single layer covered by a thin layer of wax. They prefer well-developed branches, and above all, upright ones. Oncometopia are phytophagous, feeding on the sap of plants, effectively constituting an important herbivory role in nature. They have a preference for Coffea sp. ("Coffee") and Citrus sp.. Their importance in nature can be noted in their role in the food chain. They serve as food to many animals and the excess sap they suck from plants are secreted from their behinds into a highly nutricious dew that serves as food to many insects, such as butterflies, bees, wasps and ants. The white, round structure on the wings of the Oncometopia portrayed is called a "brochosome", which the females apply over the eggs for protection. Many similar species can be found in this genus, some of which do look like the one in the picture, such as Oncometopia maya, so identification to species level can be uncertain to my knowledge.

Feeding type: Phytophagous. Mostly feeds on the sap of Coffea sp. and Citrus sp..
