Ctenus sp. - Wandering Spider (Walckenaer, 1805)

Description: Ctenus is a genus of wandering spiders in the family Ctenidae and subfamily Cteninae. They are widely distributed in South America through Africa to East Asia. They are normally mistaken with spiders in the genus Phoneutria and are ignorantly killed due to the latter's venom. Ctenus spiders' venom has no medical importance, however. They are hunters, normally surfacing during nocturnal hours to predate amphibians, small animals and insects. The subject portrayed is a male and his size could be matched by the palm of an adult's hand. They are extremely important in nature as natural biological regulators, as they control the populations of a variety of creatures, such as Anurans. These spiders are also used as bioindicators of good environmental quality.
