Platanthera x keenanii closeup - a photo on Flickriver

This native orchid was seen in WV on the field trips of our recent Native Orchid Conference. This beautiful plant was probably the highlight of the conference. There is investigation going on to see if this might be a new species, but in my opinon it is the standard cross between P. gradiflora and P. lacera. The plant was named for Phil Keenan who was a fantastic naturalist. He was a friend who wrote a travelog about his orchid adventures across the US. We saw a couple colonies of this plant around Cranberry Glades. I have a slide from almost 25 years ago of the same hybrid in the same general area of WV. Note from 2011 - a friend & I found several plants in the late summer on a mountain top outside Boone, NC.
