Pillar & Kirk Fell above Wasdale Head

Many of the Lake District's valleys hardly receive any sunlight in the depths of winter due to the low angle and direction of the seasonal sun. The craggy hills rise steeply, looming overhead and casting vast shadows over the surrounding landscape.

The small agricultural hamlet of Wasdale Head is encompassed almost entirely by many of England's highest and finest peaks, yet in winter the low afternoon sun aligns perfectly with a gap on the horizon allowing a shaft of light to penetrate the otherwise shaded depths of this famed valley. I love how, in the right conditions, the illuminated pastures contrast with the dramatic backdrop of dark and wintry mountains.

I have explored a few viewpoints of this valley over the years, and this is definitely one of my favourite angles with the ominous Pillar dwarfing the buildings and drystone walls beneath. The conditions were exactly what I had in mind on this occassion, with the spotlight of late afternoon sun highlighting the valley like a stage amid the arena of monstrous mountains.
