The Pilot Men

The job in the 19th century was so much more dangerous than these days. But despite GPS, the narrow Tamar Channel, surrounded as it is by reefs, is not one that captains without local knowledge want to risk bring their ships through (usually to the Port of Bell Bay).

In the early days the Pilot men all lived on site and it required a great deal of skill and bravery to row their boats out to the ships, and let the Pilot climb aboard to take the wheel. www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/49744755502/in/dateposted/
