A New Kind of Union - a photo on Flickriver

            This contemporary art work dominates a corner of the gallery. It consists of painting, ceramics and poetry. It is the work of two brilliant Tasmanian artists, Mish Meijers and Tricky Walsh. Its title is "A New Kind of Union" (2021), and so it looks to a future beyond the pain and struggles of the past. Tricky Walsh has contributed a poem (I sincerely hope you take the time to read it, it may change your outlook on life! Is that why people are so afraid of words?):

For those who, alone in low lit rooms, have pondered the nature of things
Without fanfare or profit.
For those whose voices have been silenced
Whether by fatigue or by intent,
Who negotiate with quiet words and dispel the necessity of fists and sticks and stones and worse.
For those whose hands have worried out the wrinkles of time
Who have untangled the threads, who have woven back the fabric of existence.
The fixers, the makers, the underpaid labourers
Those who have built, nurtured, or enlightened with an imperative to lift us all a little higher.
For those who have calculated the mysteries of the world and beyond
Who think beyond their peripheries and ours,
The abstract linguists who speak in code, and sometimes in starlight.
For those who make beauty in place of ambivalence
Whose eyes see beyond the here and now to the possible and the might-be.
To those who seek truth in the face of lies
Who stand when others have fallen.
All of the names that have been lost, whose inheritance we carry with us blindly.
A legacy unpayable. A minute not of silence, but of gratitude.

* REMEMBER THAT TRUE ART IS ALWAYS MORE THAN MERE ART. If the words of that poem can't reduce one to tears then perhaps hope is lost. Tricky Walsh's poem expresses everything I have been trying (in some cases unsuccessfully) to say over recent days. It seems such a pity to me that we have so much potential the make real change in our world by using the Flickr platform for far more than the obvious, "You show me yours and I'll show you mine," mentality. Pity. Oh the pity!

** Am I trying to change people's lives? You bet! It's time to wake up. Time is short, but only those with ears to hear will understand.
