Paris Bastille France September 1969

            Moving east across Paris to the other station that still featured steam-hauled commuter trains in 1969 - Gare de la Bastille. 

This is the atmospheric interior of the station's beautiful 1859 Victorian trainshed seen from near the entrance by the buffer stops.  141TB422  is at the head of the train to Verneuil-l'Etang. The engine is outside of the trainshed as all trains were push-pull operated, chimney-first, but smoke has entered into the station giving a mistiness to the filtered light.

Not a lot of activity to be seen but this was mid-day after the early rush & before the evening rush and all was still.

Half-price travel is advertised on the hoardings along with exhortations to travel to Lille. The slot-machine dispenses chocolate.

I only just managed to see this station & its service because the last steam train departed on 14th December 1969, a 100 years after its opening. Trains were then diverted onto the new cross-Paris RER A line to La Defense. It was later demolished in 1984 to make way for the Opera de la Bastille.
