20211122-DSC_2292 - House Sparrow

            During the 1850s the problem of insects damaging grain and cereal crops was so huge the House Sparrow was introduced in Brooklyn, New York to feed on the insects and try to control the problem. By the time it was learned that the House Sparrow is a vegetarian, it had been introduced to several other areas of the United States and now inhabits all of North America except Alaska and northern Canada and their help to control insects was very minimal.
They are not related to any other North American sparrow as they are a member of a Eurasian family called "Weaver-Finches". Their diet keeps them gleaning the ground and weeds for seeds, fruit and a few insects. All towns, cities, suburbs and farmsteads are familiar habitats of the House Sparrow.
They like to nest in tree cavities but also like birdhouses and being quite aggressively natured they will take over nest sites of other species.
It is commonplace to find them on the ground taking dust baths. They use dust as frequently as other species use birdbaths.
