The archway in Købmagergade, Copenhagen

            Originally, this photo would have been taken inside the building. 

However, as the traffic in Copenhagen increased the narrow part of the street of Købmagergade (where The Round Tower, Rundetårn is located) became a place of congestion.

Therefore, something had to be done. 

A suggestion was to move the Round Tower (so it would be next to the church instead) but luckily another solution was chosen. 

Architect Martin Borch suggested the creation of an archway, which was completed in 1908.

Ironically, you rarely see anyone using the archway - but that is because Købmagergade has been a walking street since 1973 (and is connected to “Strøget”, the main walking street of Copenhagen.

And the Round Tower still stands where it has always stood.
