Lower Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

            This tremendous waterfall along the Yellowstone River sends tens of thousands of gallons per second tumbling over 300 feet into the bottom of the canyon. Combined with the Upper Yellowstone Falls just up the river, these falls are slowly but relentlessly cutting the landscape as they carve out the canyon by eroding upriver. And what a canyon they have carved. The yellowish walls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are striking, providing a window into the volcanic nature of the lands here. The walls are very steep and yet the coniferous forest works hard to try to colonize the steep slopes. The wonders of Yellowstone National Park are seemingly endless, but its mightiest waterfall is definitely one of the best.
