Danish red church

            The details of Danish brick Gothic are strongly influenced by the north German variety. From Germany came the hall church which was principally used by the monastic orders, for instance the Bridgettine church in Maribo (now Maribo Cathedral).

In the rural parishes Gothic showed itself mainly in alterations and extensions to the Romanesque churches, which were provided with sacristies, chapels, bell towers, extensions to the east and west – often accompanied by vaulting above the naves – and not least, larger windows with pointed arches in accordance with the Gothic’s demand for light-filled space.

Externally, the new sections of the buildings were often dominated by the characteristic stepped gables of the time, which were supplemented by richly decorated blind arcades.
