Fifty Point Viewed From Kelson Beach

            Having had a snowfall on Christmas morning, the Niagara Peninsula in Southern Ontario had a white Christmas. A couple of days later I took the opportunity to head over to Kelson Beach on the West boundary of Grimsby, Ontario (where it abuts with Winona, a part of the Regional City of Hamilton) on the South shore of Lake Ontario. Kelson Beach provides an opportunity to view Fifty Point, one of Hamilton’s parks, from outside the park. Looking more-or-less West here, you can also see the northwest shore of Lake Ontario and some of the built up shoreline belonging to the City of Burlington and a bit of Mississauga. The day itself was overcast and consequently cast the area in a dull blue light. The snow on the rocks was just deep enough to let them stand out individually. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a vintage AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 180mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/8.0, 1/50 sec for each of 4 overlapping frames all with an EV+1.0 exposure bias to handle the fairly bright scene. The 4 overlapping frames were processed in free Open Source Hugin panorama software to create a single image 20000x5113 pixels and saved to TIFF 16-bit format for subsequent processing. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Hugin 16-bit TIFF source file from the preceding stage: set final image size to be 20000px wide, level the image, brighten image overall by setting exposure compensation to EV+0.35, set colour balance by using a sample point off the snow on one of the central rocks, slightly increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to recover highlights as well as shadow detail, very slightly boost Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: sharpen slightly, save, scale to 4000px vertical, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on bottom, save, scale image to 1910 px vertical for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
