L2020_5485 - Llanymynech Welsh Quarry Incline Drum House

This is the remains of the incline drum house located within the Welsh Quarry. It was was used to lower narrow gauge wagons from the upper levels of the quarry to the lower levels. From the lower levels access was made to the English Incline from which stock could be lowered to Llanymynech.

Traces of the brake mechanism can be seen attached to the beams.

Llanymynech Quarries and Lime Works straddle the Powys / Shropshire border. Much of the quarrying activity took place in Wales whilst the processing of the lime took place in England as did transhipment of stone from the internal narrow gauge railways to the former Cambrian Railway later GWR.

Vertical Shaft draw kilns adjacent to the later Hoffmann Kiln whose stack can be seen in the background. These kilns date from the 1870s and were fed by tramway running to the top of the kiln.

The features of this heritage area are well maintained and various trail leaflets can be downloaded from their supporting web site. The site is always open and there is no admission charge. llanylime.co.uk/
