A rainbow in the clay - a photo on Flickriver

            The San Rafael Swell has a variety of sites where bentonite clays color the landscape. A nice feature of this set of mounds is that the volcanic vents that belched the ash are just a few miles to the north.

While bentonite clay is exotic and esthetic, it is treacherous when it gets wet. Bentonite has mired many a 4WD, and experienced drivers will not venture on it immediately after rain. It is also well known to builders, for the clay swells with water and shrinks as it dries, cracking walls and foundations of buildings sitting on it.

Nevertheless, I love the colors and the crazy land forms.
