Gasometer - a photo on Flickriver

Gasometer

            Each time I am there, I am fascinated by the size of this construction – again today. It has a total height of 117 m and a diameter of 67 m, resulting in a huge volume in its interior. Even though illuminated by roof lights and electrical lights, the interior is rather dark (and above image required a rather long exposure); when you enter it and while your eyes gradually adjust to the darkness, you slowly start to comprehend the extent of its dimensions. The diagonal lines in the bottom left are part of an elevator; going up more than 100 m in the cabin with its glass walls is certainly not for people challenged by heights (like me).

The Gasometer had been used up to 1988 to store gas which had been created in nearby steel plants and which had been used to fire the coke ovens in the nearby coking plant. To assure constant gas pressure, a huge steel disc of more than 1.200 t weight was floating on top of the gas within the Gasometer. Today, the Gasometer is housing exhibitions and is a symbol of the structural change of the Ruhrgebiet area, which has lost most of its steel industry due to high production costs within Germany.
