Baroque Knocker, Prague, Czech Republic

One of the door knocker's at St. Nicholaus church Kostel Svateho Mikuláse in the Old Town Square of Praha, Česká Republika, in the Staré Město section of the city.

The Church of St. Nicholas, not to be confused with the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in the Lesser Town Square a short walk away, started as a parish church sometime around 1273. After burning down in the 1600s, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style by architect Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer and completed in 1735s.

Under the reign of Josef II, all monasteries without a social function were closed, and so the church was gutted in 1781, all of its interior decorations sold and the building served as a granary and later as an archive. In 1871, the church was returned to its original purpose, though as a Russian Orthodox Church.
