Starlights in the Snow

They say that if you hang out by the tracks long enough, you'll see just about anything. In my case, that would be the Coast Starlights meeting in my hometown of Klamath Falls, Oregon on a snowy Saturday morning.

It had snowed a lot during the night. Southbound train 11, which should have arrived in Klamath Falls around 10 PM the previous evening, was running around 12 hours late. Northbound train 14 arrived Klamath within an hour or so of being on-time. Unfortunately, the outbound crew for train 14 would have been the crew from the previous night's train 11 - which, of course, had not yet arrived at Klamath Falls!

In 2004, Horizon Air (Alaska Airlines' regional carrier) was still flying to Klamath Falls. For the passengers on the northbound Starlight, parked on yard track 25, this was very fortunate. The outbound crew for No. 14 was called in Portland that morning, and went to Klamath on the first Horizon flight of the day.

Up by the station, the northbound Starlight is departing Klamath Falls, just after the southbound has arrived on the main line. As amazing as it seems, here are both Coast Starlights in Klamath Falls at once - yes, it really happened.
