Edredone sul lago di Como – Ecco lo scoop (forse…)

            L’edredone è un grosso uccello appartenente alla famiglia degli anatidi che vive lungo le coste marine nelle regioni artiche e subartiche dell’emisfero boreale e quindi nelle gelide acque costiere dell'oceano Artico, dell'Atlantico e del Pacifico. Ha corpo tozzo e piumaggio assai differenziato per genere: il maschio ha una colorazione molto marcata con il dorso bianco e il ventre nero; le femmine, sono brune e striate di nero, livrea simile alle femmine del germano reale, escludendo il petto di colore bianco. Il peso medio è di circa 2 Kg. e la lunghezza compresa fra 50 e 70 cm. 
Gli edredoni hanno la testa con il largo becco che nell’insieme assume un profilo a cono. Caratteristica è anche l’area scura che i maschi portano sul capo e che si prolunga in avanti arrivando fino alla base del becco. Nidificano e svernano lungo le coste marine formando stormi molto numerosi di centinaia di esemplari. Imbottiscono il nido con grandi quantità di piume che la femmina si strappa dal petto. Talvolta si spinge verso laghi e fiumi affluenti nell'oceano ma non si allontana mai troppo dalle zone costiere. 
Davvero inusuale, quindi, vederlo in Italia. La foto è stata scattata sul lago di Como all’inizio del gennaio 2011; forse è il segno che l'inverno di quest'anno è stato gelido?!?!?

The eider is a large bird belonging to the family of ducks that lives along the sea coasts in the Arctic and subarctic regions of the northern hemisphere and then in the cold coastal waters of the Arctic ocean, Atlantic and Pacific. It has squat body and different plumage considerably by gender: the male has a very strong color with white back and black belly; the females are brown streaked and black plumage similar to female of mallard, excluding the chest in white. The average weight is about 2 kg and length between 50 and 70 cm.
The eider duck has large beak with a cone profile and the males have dark area carry on the head arriving at the base of the beak. They nesting and wintering along the sea coasts, forming flocks of hundreds of birds. They quilt the nest with lots of feathers that the female torns from his chest. Sometimes it goes to lakes and rivers, tributaries in the ocean but never strays too far from the coastal areas.
Very unusual, then, to see it in Italy. The photo was taken on lake of Como in early January 2011.
