Verbania (lago Maggiore) - Gabbiano comune in veste invernale

            Il Gabbiano comune (Larus ridibundus) è facilmente identificabile per l'estremità nera delle ali, le zampe sono di colore rosso come il becco. Le parti inferiori del corpo e la coda sono di colore bianco. Le penne secondarie sono grigie punteggiate di bianco, mentre le primarie esterne sono bianche con le estemità scure. Durante l'inverno ha una macchia scura dietro l'occhio.  
Emette un grido rauco ed è una specie molto rumorosa.  
Benchè sia una specie marina ha preso l'abitudine di frequentare le aree continentali e ha l’habitat presso laghi, stagni, vasti canneti, paludi, stagni costieri, centri urbani. Si nutre nuotando e raccogliendo il cibo dalla superficie dell'acqua oppure immergendo il capo al di sotto della superficie..  
E’ una specie onnivora e si nutre principalmente di animali, ed in particolare di insetti e vermi, ma anche di piante e di rifiuti. Le popolazioni del nord Europa sono migratrici. Gli uccelli che vivono alle latitudini minori, come in Italia, invece tendono a essere stanziali.

The White common gull (Larus ridibundus) is easily identified by the black end of the wings; the legs are red as the beak. The lower parts of the body and tail are white. The secondary feathers are gray with white specks, while the primaries are white exterior with dark extremities. During the winter it has a dark patch behind the eye.
It emits a hoarse cry and it is a noisy species.
It is a marine species but it has the habit of attending the continental areas and lakes, ponds, extensive reedbeds, marshes, coastal ponds, urban centers. It feeds on swimming and gathering food from the water surface by immersing the head below the surface.
This kind of  species is omnivorous and mainly feeds on animals, particularly insects and worms, but also plants and waste. The populations of northern Europe are migratory. The birds living at lower latitudes, as in Italy, tend to be sedentary.
