Spedlins Tower 1

            Standing on the right bank of the Annan this tower was long roofless but was restored in the early 1980s. The lower 2 floors are the remains of a 15th century peel tower. Above this the work is 17th century. The lower walls are 10 feet thick and beneath a turnpike stair in the south-east corner contain a prison pit 7½ feet by 2½ feet by 11 feet deep. Spedlins was a fortalice of the powerful border family Jardine. The story is told that it is, or was, haunted by the ghost of a miller named Porteous. He was imprisoned in the pit by the first baronet Jardine who, called away to Edinburgh, forgot about the poor miller and he starved to death.
