LT E/3 tram No. 1947 @ Gaumont, New Cross - Jun 1952

One of a collection of 3" x 2" amateur transport photographs. unfortunately there is no photographer name This one is of London Transport E/3 class tram No. 1947 by the Gaumont Cinema at the junction of New Cross Road and Lewisham Way.

The photo reverse is annotated with "LTE car 1947 - service 40 - New Cross - 29/6/52".

No. 1947 was an ex London County Council Tramways (LCC) unvestibuled E/3 class car built in 1930 by Hurst Nelson seating 28/46 and running on EMB (LCC class 4A) maximum traction trucks. It was built to replace old A and D class cars and work the Kingsway Subway services (after being deepened to allow double deck cars it reopened Jan 1931), as well as its normal destination blinds it had an illuminated sign showing 'via KINGSWAY SUBWAY', when on non subway routes this was covered over. In 1931 went into Charlton Works to have vestibule/driver screens fitted.

Its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933 and it ran in service until the system closure, being disposed of (broken up or sold) the following month in the Penhall Road Works/Yard. The parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1952.
