Sunderland tram No. 39 - a photo on Flickriver

            An old photograph of Sunderland Corporation Tramways (SCT) tram No. 39 showing a 'Grangetown' destination blind.

The photo reverse is initialled by the photographer (and negative owner) A. D. Packer.
 
No. 39 was ex Manchester Corporation Tramways  (MCT) 'Pilcher' car No. 163 built as a fully enclosed car by MCT going into service in 1930 seating 22/40 and running on a 4-wheel Peckham P35 truck. 

It was bought by SCT in 1947, going into service in the August unaltered apart from the livery, withdrawn from service in early 1953 and scrapped.

The parts of the Manchester tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jan 1949. The parts of the Sunderland tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Oct 1954.
