Croydon tram No. 59 @ Thornton Heath Stn. c1905

An old photograph (and used as a postcard?) of Croydon Corporation Tramways (CCT) car No. 59 at Thornton Heath Railway Station in c1905. At this time the operation of the tramway was leased to British Electric Traction (BET).

The reverse has no photographer name but is annotated with "return to F. Merton Atkins.".

No. 59 was one of a group of five cars (Nos. 56-60) built in 1902 by Brush as open top unvestibuled cars seating 30/39 and running on Brush type BB reversed maximum traction bogies. In 1906 the corporation took back the day to day operation of the tramway, the five cars were transferred to another BET subsidiary, South Metropolitan Electric Tramways (SMET) where they were renumbered as 26-29, 31, and 35. Their ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933, all of the cars going into storage at Fulwell Depot before being broken up the following year.

The parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1952.
