LT E/1 tram No. 1260 in Greenwich - a photo on Flickriver

An old photograph of London Transport (LT) E/1 class domed roof tram No. 1260 showing '70 - Bermondsey St' destination blinds. Taken in Greenwich Church Street, to the photographers right is Nelson Street/Road.

The photographer (and/or negative owner) name on the reverse is too faint to make out, if you know who the photographer was please message me the details and I will credit them.

No. 1260 was an ex London County Council Tramways (LCC) car new in 1910, built by Hurst Nelson seating 27/46 and running on Heenam & Froude (LCC class 4A) maximum traction trucks. In Jun 1928 it was 'pullmanised' (modernised), getting upholstered seats and a brightened up interior.

In 1933 its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) and in Jun 1935 it was reconditioned/rehabilitated (aka a 'rehab car') which included having driver screens (platform vestibules) fitted. It was withdrawn from service in Sep 1950 and in the November was disposed of (broken up or sold) in the Penhall Road Works,

The parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1952.

"1260 was one of a handful of cars that was fitted with a domed roof during 1934/5 (in similar style to Bluebird #1). At this stage various ideas were discussed for the rehabilitation scheme including the use of such new roofs.
Others were 982 1103 1373. Hybrid ME3 class 1444 and 1446 also had them. (ME3s were originally M class four wheelers extended to be the same length as E1s and fitted with bogies)
1446 was later renumbered 1370 taking the number of a tram written off in an accident in 1933. A new body was built for the remains of the original 1370 which then became #2.
In the event the 'standard rehabs' received less attention keeping their original flat roofs." 🚃
