Sheffield trams No. 199 & No. 150 in colour

A version of an old photograph (just 3" x 2") hand *colourised (if you want to use it, at least credit me and link to this description please!), of Sheffield Corporation Tramways (SCT) trams No. 199 showing a 'Millhouses' destination blind and No. 150 showing 'City - Woodseats - Saville St' destination blinds.

The picture was taken in the now redeveloped Moorhead area of Sheffield, behind 150 is the *Crimean War Memorial (junction of Pinstone Street, The Moor, & Furnival Gate) and a sign showing 'Moorhead 1'.

The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name J. A. Hunt and the date 17 May 1958.

No. 199 was a 'Standard Car' built by SCT in 1934 and was one of the last group of cars painted in the old livery of dark blue and cream, it seated 24/37 and ran on a 4 wheel Peckham P22 truck. It operated in passenger service up to and including the last day (28 Feb 1959) of the Abbey Lane route, being to last tram to run from Beauchief to Woodseats and the last car to run in the old livery. It was withdrawn from service immediately after the route closure and scrapped, the parts of the Sheffield tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closing in Oct 1960.

No. 150 was built in 1930 as a fully enclosed 'Standard' car by W. & E. Hill seating 24/37 and running on a Peckham P22 truck. The Hill contract was for 25 cars but after 18 had been delivered the firm went into liquidation, the remaining 7 cars were produced with a receiver in charge. In 1952 No. 150 was one of the cars that had an experimental livery comprising two shades of green, this was not very successful and the following year all cars with an experimental green livery were repainted in the 'new' 1935 one.

In Aug 1960 it was one of 15 cars withdrawn from service and sent to Tinsley Depot, from there it was shunted by diesel tractor across to the yard of T. W. Ward to be broken up. The parts of the Sheffield tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in October of the same year.

** Crimean War Monument.
In 1960 changes to the road layout meant that the monument was moved from Moorhead to Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens without the column, which was reportedly broken up and placed in a park. In 2004, the Botanical Gardens were restored to their 1836 layout and the remainder of the monument was removed to storage from which it has not yet emerged.
