Little Venice, London - B+W Neutral Density Filter +10 first test

A few weeks ago I finally got a B+W Neutral Density Filter +10 (equivalent to ND1024). This filter reduces the light entering the lens - and therefore the camera - of 10 stops. In other words, only 1/1000th of the light makes it to the camera sensor.

The main reason to use a ND filter so powerful is to be able to extend the exposure, even in broad daylight, to several seconds (or even minutes, depending on how you play with your aperture and ISO). Additionally, ND filters allow to shot with fast lenses wide open in sunlight, which is a great plus when you need razor-thin DoF and/or a lot of bokeh.

The filter I bought on Amazon is the 'B+W 52mm 110 Single Coated +10 Stop Neutral Density Filter - F-PRO Mount', which seems to be the best available on the market (at this optical density, filter quality is even more important) and pairs pretty well with my current favourite lenses, the fast primes Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f0.95 I use on my Panasonic GF1, and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 I use on my Canon 500D.

For this test I've used my GF1, Voigtlander 25mm 0.95, and Manfrotto tripod. I went to Little Venice figuring that the lightly moving water of the canal and the passing boats would make for a good use case. These are the first long exposure shots I took with the ND +10 filter, and vary from 3.2" to 30" exposures (mostly are between 20" and 30" - you can see more details on the EXIF files). Aperture varies between shots, and is not recorded in the EXIFs since the Voigtlander 25mm is a fully manual lens (generally these shots are between f2 and f11).
