Darryl Dawkins Tribute - a photo on Flickriver

            Posting this as a tribute to Darryl Dawkins, who passed away at the young age of 58 on August 27th,2015 in a hospital in Allentown Pennsylvania.  A former NBA star famous for his thunderous dunks and flamboyant personality was a member of that Philadelphia 76ers team that lost to the Portland Trail Blazers in six games in 1977 and began my fascination and fandom with the game of basketball.  
A poor kid from Orlando Florida, Darryl became the first player the NBA drafted in the first round (#5 overall) straight out of high school.   His dreams at that point were simple, he wanted to give his mother and grandmother better lives.  He went on to play 14 seasons in the NBA, most with the 76ers who drafted him and the New Jersey Nets.  Often remembered for shattering the glass of the backboard during a game, which he did twice, he was beloved by his fellow players and fans.  NBA great Shaquille O'Neal once said “Darryl Dawkins is the father of power dunking, I'm just one of his sons.”
This image was captured the last time I saw him in person, back in April of 2012 at the New Jersey Nets last home game in New Jersey at the Prudential Center in Newark(they relocated across the river, actually 2 rivers the Hudson and East to Brooklyn) where at halftime great NJ Nets were honored.  Now doesn’t that bright pink suit say flamboyant that’s textbook Dawkins? RIP Darryl.
