Palazzo Pretorio - Piazza San Michele, Lucca - bronze statue of Matteo Civitali

A look around Lucca, this wasn't a guided tour but we were being taken towards the Piazza Anfiteatro. The weather was fine in the morning.

Piazza San Michele was the very center of the city during the Roman's age. Its perfect square shape is due to the fact that it was the junction of the "cardo" and the "decumanus", the main straight streets of a Roman town. At the center of this square you'll find the church of San Michele in Foro (usually "in Foro" is neglected, so call it just San Michele).

Palazzo Pretorio - there was some sculptures within this building.

The Palazzo Pretoria is a Renaissance-style civic office building, built mainly during 16th-centuries, located in the Piazza San Michele of central Lucca, region of Tuscany, Italy.

It was originally erected in 1370 as a tribunal or Hall of Justice for the Podesta. In 1492, housing for the Podesta was added to it and finished about 1509. Further additions were made in 1588 by Vincenzio Civitali, who left it in its present form. It is now occupied by the courts of civil law.

Bronze statue of Civitali sitting in a chair, in his work clothes and with his tools workmanship: a leather apron is knotted on the farce, in his right hand holds a mullet and in the other hand a chisel. He look is aimed at his work: the Madonna of Cough on the right corner of the façade of the Church of St. Michael in Foro. Half under the chair is a large medal with a portrait of Domenico Bertini, worker at the cathedral, who commissioned Civitali for the Chapel of the Holy Face in the Cathedral.
