Rani Devi

Rani Devi took birth as the only daughter of a middle class brahmane familly. She says at home, her mother never asked her any help, cherished her, cooking what she liked, and was overprotective

At the age of 11, she got married, came seven years later to live in Sonepur in her husbond house. She didn't even know how to cook chappati, and she had to make about a hundred everyday.. She remembers how tears were coming down her cheeks, how her arms were painful.
"When you come to your husbond's house, you have to do the work" she says. And she birst out laughing.

Rani Devi says she is very happy, her husbond loves her, and she loves him :
"We are always together, we cannot stand to be far from each other, even for one night". And again she laught.

Rani Devi was my daily smile when in Sonepur, smiling from morning to evening. This was shot during the "Surya Puja", when women offer tribute to the sun. Behind her is here daughter.

Rani Devi raconte qu’elle a été mariée à 11 ans. Elle est venue cohabiter avec son mari à ses 18 ans. Elle ne savait même pas faire des chapatti. Chez ses parents, elle était la seule fille, donc hyper gâtée. Sa mère cuisinait tout ce qu’elle demandait, elle-même ne faisait rien. Lorsqu’elle est arrivée chez ses beaux-parents, il fallait faire des chapatti pour 25 personnes. Elle roulait les galettes, et les larmes coulaient. « Lorsque tu viens chez ton mari, que ça te plaise où non, il faut faire le travail de la maison » dit-elle en éclatant de rire.

Rani Devi et son mari s'adorent, ils ne se quittent jamais, même pas pour une nuit. Elle rit en disant cela, une rire qui traduit sa pudeur à évoquer son intimité.

Cette femme était mon soleil quotidien à Sonepur, souriante du matin au soir. Cette photo a été prise durant la Surya Puja, ce rituel où les femmes font des offrandes au soleil au bord des rivières. D'où la marque de vermillon sur son nez. Derrière elle se tient sa fille.
