Depth of Winter

If you haven’t attempted to view any of my 3D images before, I urge you to try this one out. The uploaded image is a cross-view for crossing your eyes (I’ll explain that in a moment), but here are other versions based on what you have to view 3D:

Using just your own eyes, you can get a pretty detailed view of this stereo image by crossing your eyes. It’s usually best to start with the image taking up 25% of your field of view or less, but you can experiment once you get your eyes to “lock on”. When you cross your eyes, you’ll be seeing double, and the trick is to see three versions of the image exactly, but crossing your eyes just enough. Too far and you see four, too little and you won’t see much of anything.

It takes a bit of practice, and even still about half the population can’t get this to work… but that means half the people reading this can do it if they put in a little effort. :) There’s a great animation and description here for those determined: www.kula3d.com/how-to-use-the-cross-eyed-method.html

This is an image of a freezing soap bubble on a branch of my Christmas tree placed in the snow. It was taken with a special 3D lens made for full-frame SLR cameras manufactured by deWijs, who have sadly stopped producing these lenses. I found this particular one on eBay for a few hundred dollars and snapped it up! They don’t appear often. It’s basically two separate tiny lenses in one barrel with a divider running down the length of the lens to keep them separated. On the image sensor, one image appears on the right side and one on the left.

These lenses have fixed apertures that are very small (I believe this one is F/45) so looking through the viewfinder is tricky and takes some practice. My highest magnification lens is F/80, even worse! Shooting this handheld, I gently rock a little forward and back to ensure that at least some of my shots hit the exact focus point I’m after.

With the technical challenges to overcome and with a much more limited viewing audience for this type of work, it’s still worth it. If you think this is magic in 2D, 3D will definitely make you say “wow”. :)
