Ring-Billed Gull (2023-02-15 #1)

            Ring-Billed Gull.

An 18 to 20 inch gull.  The adults are silvery gray on their back with a white head, tail and underside.  They have greenish-yellow legs and feet and have a narrow black ring around their bill.  Young gulls are a mottled brown and have a narrow blackish tail band and flesh colored legs.  It takes about three years for a juvenile to get the adult plumage.

They inhabit lakes and rivers with many moving to salt water in the winter.

They range along the Pacific Coast in the west, the northern Great Plains and southern prairie provinces of Canada and also in the Great Lakes regions.  In the east they are in the Canadian Maritime Provinces south to northern New England.  In the winter they range from British Columbia to southern Mexico in the west, and in the east from southern New England to the Gulf Coast.
