Nights of Hanoi

In July 2012, I traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam for business. After work, I used to wander the streets of Hanoi with my camera all of the time. My work location was in the Ba Dinh district of Hanoi, where as I used to wander in the Hoan Kiem District every day in the evenings.

Vietnam is, or at least Hanoi is in my personal opinion, the 1980’s of what India was. The sights you see every day in Vietnam remind you of your Indian Childhood, every other moment. The old withering building that I worked in, training bank employees to the sights and sounds on the streets. It all reminds you of India in the 80’s.

I wandered the streets of Hoan Kiem on my last day here in Hanoi. As I walked through deserted streets, late in the night, away from the party sounds of the pubs and eateries, the nights of Hanoi resemble India so much. These old houses on either sides are a block by block replica of the Victorian age buildings you would find in Chennai or elsewhere in India. All that has changed is a layer of lights and neon lamps, nothing more. The sodium vapor lamps on the streets that try to pierce through the dense wire trapped jungle overhead reminds you of chaotic Indian cities, yet the slightly better quality of roads and existence of foot paths remind you that you are home away, from home.
