Ich sah des Sommers letzte Rose stehn,
Sie war, als ob sie bluten könnte, rot
Da sprach ich schaudernd im Vorübergehn:
So weit im Leben, ist zu nah dem Tod!

Es regte sich kein Hauch am heißen Tag,
Nur leise strich ein weißer Schmetterling;
Doch, ob auch kaum die Luft sein Flügelschlag
bewegte, sie empfand es und verging.

 I saw the summer's last rose standing,
She was as if she could bleed, red
Then I said shuddering in passing:
So far in life, is too near death!

There was no breath on the hot day,
Only a white butterfly was softly stroked;
But whether the air is too much of a stroke
She felt it and passed away.
