Royal Iris - a photo on Flickriver

Royal Iris

            Seen between two of the Thames Flood Barrier piers. The Royal Iris was once a Mersey Ferry in Liverpool. Built in 1951 it was the first diesel (as opposed to steam) boat on that route. It found fame not just as a ferry but a private function boat also and hosted many live bands including a then little known beat combo called The Beatles. It also found fame in the song 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' by Gerry and The Pacemakers. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip toured Liverpool harbour aboard on 21st June 1977 as part of the silver jubilee celebrations.

Royal Iris was decommissioned in 1991 and, after some failed business ventures which intended turning it into a floating nightclub both in Liverpool and Cardiff, it finally arrived in Woolwich in 2002 where it has been left to rot ever since. In 2010 it started to take in water and is now resting on a mud bank.
