The Sasabe Church - a photo on Flickriver

The Sasabe Church

The Sasabe church was copied and re-built in the city of Tucson for the filming of the Movie "Lilies of the Field" starring Sydney Poitier in 1963. I had visited the Sasabe General Store inquiring why there was a barbed wire fence around the original church, when before there never was. Vandalism by border crossers. (It's less than a mile from the US/Mexico border.) The Archdioceses in Tucson put up the fence. However, she had the keys, due to her great grandfather was the adobe brick maker, mason and builder of the chapel. The owner gave me the keys to the church and I had the entire place to myself. A day I will never forget.
